Parental Monitoring Instrument (PMI)

The Parental Monitoring Instrument (Cottrell et al, 2007) is a 27 item measure that assesses the various monitoring strategies parents use for their children under seven factors: direct, indirect, restrictive, school, health, computer and phone monitoring; using a Likert scale (0 times, 1-2 times, 3-4 times, 5-plus times). The PMI has an adolescent version and a parent version.

Both versions of the PMI were translated to Spanish by the CIFFTA-P study (University of Miami Protocol # 20070334) team, Principal Investigator Dr. Daniel Santisteban.  The translation process consisted of 3 steps:  translation, back translation, and comparison/reconciliation by a third party in consultation with other native speakers as needed.
