Bidimensional Acculturation Scale (BAS)

The Bidimensional Acculturation Scale (BAS) (Marin & Gamba, 1996) is a 24 item measure of acculturation under three domains: general language use, language proficiency, and language use in media, and within two subscales (Hispanic and non-Hispanic subscales); using a 4-point Likert scale (1 = almost never, 4 = almost always).

Translation Information:

The BAS was translated to Spanish by the measure developers.  Questions were double translated and decentered.

The Spanish version of the measure that appears on this site was used by the SEPA II Study (University of Miami Protocol #20070318), Principal Investigator, Dr. Nilda Peragallo. It differs slightly from the developers’ version in that the linguistic proficiency subscales questions (7-18) begin with “Como usted” rather than “Que tan bien” which was used in the developers’ version.
