SUMMERS SCHOLAR PROGRAM



The EL CENTRO Summers Scholar Program is for students interested in pursuing research experiences with Hispanic populations in the following areas:

• Substance abuse
• HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections
• Family and intimate partner violence

Eligibility: Graduate,  Medical or upper division Undergraduate students are eligible.

Program Requirements:

  • CITI certification is required prior to beginning the program
  • Final poster/presentation at completion of program
  • Commitment of 20 hours per week for 8 weeks during the first (May 14-June 24) or second summer session (June 25- August 8)

Examples of research experiences include assisting with recruitment, screening, interviews or interventions; data management, input or quality assurance; attendance at seminars; IRB protocol preparation; and assisting with proposal or manuscript preparation.

Stipend: We anticipate that four scholars will be selected each year for the Summers Scholar Program.  Scholars will receive a stipend of $2000 (undergraduate students) or $3200 (graduate/medical students).

Application Process:

  • Copy of transcript from current university
  • 2 letters of recommendation from a faculty member, employer or research mentor
  • 1 page narrative on how this summer experience will enrich your educational experience
  • Candidate interview after application review

Selection Process: All applications will be reviewed by an appointed EL CENTRO selection committee headed by the El Centro Research Education and Training Core Director, Dr. Denise Korniewicz.

All applicants will be notified in writing via email if they have been selected for the program.
